Nightfall in Mogadishu av Veronica Li
Mogadishu, Somalia, 1990, the last year in the existence of Somalia as a nation-state.
“Outside, the night crashed down on him. Darkness had never frightened him before. He`d grown up without electricity and had known darkness to be as comforting as a warm blanket. But this night was different; it was fraught with dangers he couldn`t see, intentions he couldn`t read, and out there was someone waiting for him, ready to pounce on him and – a shove pushed him forward. He tripped and fell, kicking and punching for all his aging body was worth. After a while he stopped. His adversary had disappeared, or perhaps there had been none at all, only the fear in his own heart. He got up and groped frantically for direction. His fingertips found a hard rough surface. It was the wall. He followed it, scraping his hands along the gritty concrete until he touched the cool iron of the neighbour`s gate. The black void in front stared at him like an empty eye socket. Clutching the rails, he called out for help.”
